The American Institute of CPAs is now accepting applications for its Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop. The Workshop, which is now in its 21st year, is an invitational program held annually for minority accounting students who plan to pursue the CPA designation. Qualified candidates may apply from now until April 30, 2015.
The Workshop will feature interactive programs, speakers and panel discussions aimed at improving attendees’ professional skills while highlighting the many career benefits of earning the CPA license. Sessions will cover issues such as passing the CPA exam, navigating corporate culture, financial literacy, and thinking like an entrepreneur
“The AICPA’s Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop is a chance for minority students to immerse themselves in accounting and learn more about the profession and the opportunities earning their CPA license provides,” said Kim Drumgo, AICPA Director, Diversity and Inclusion and Vice Chair of the National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion. “The presentations and interactive sessions have been specifically designed to help attendees develop skills that will help them throughout their careers.”
The Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of college students by helping them prepare for a successful career in the accounting profession. In addition, the program provides attendees ample opportunities to network with current CPAs and among each other.
“The Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop strengthened my networking and communication skills, and helped me develop into a more effective leader within my community and workplace,” said Shakor Jukes, a 2014 Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop Graduate and Junior Accountant at the Moret Group. “At the ASLW, attendees will develop a deeper understanding of the accounting profession and the limitless possibilities within themselves. I encourage others take advantage of this opportunity to develop a bond with their minority peers, who will be part of the future of the accounting profession.”
The ASLW is an all-expenses paid event, with the AICPA Foundation covering the cost of student attendees’ transportation, hotel accommodation, and meals.
This year’s Workshops with be held from July 29-31 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront, 700 Aliceanna Street, Baltimore, MD.
The Workshop is open to ethnic minorities who are sophomore, junior, senior, 5th year, or graduate students and have declared a major in accounting, finance or tax with an intent to pursue the CPA credential. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be actively involved in campus and community activities and be a Student Affiliate Member of the AICPA as well as a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.
The Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop is one of the ways in which the AICPA promotes diversity and inclusion in the accounting profession. The goal of the AICPA’s efforts in this area, including the National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, is to identify strategies that will increase the advancement of underrepresented minorities in the accounting profession.
